Tim Cook became CEO of Apple on August 24, 2011, when the company was worth $349 billion. His final day was Monday, and at the closing bell, Apple was worth $4.66 trillion.
Tim Cook added $4.3 trillion of market value in 15 years.
Cook expanded Apple beyond the iPhone, introducing the Apple Watch and AirPods while moving the Mac to Apple-designed silicon. Services grew into a $100 billion business supported by more than 2.5 billion active devices, and Apple returned more than $1 trillion to shareholders through dividends and share repurchases.
John Ternus now leads the $4.7 trillion company Cook leaves behind. He joined Apple in 2001, led hardware engineering across the iPhone, Mac, iPad and AirPods, and joined the board when he became CEO on September 1.
The timing reflects the challenge in front of the company. AI is changing how people interact with personal devices, and Apple’s next phase will depend on how well it brings that technology into the products people already use.
Ternus’s engineering background gives Apple a product-focused leader as AI becomes more deeply integrated across its hardware and software.
Until next week,
